SPECULATIVE LOG: A TRAILER ANALYSIS

When there's a movie coming out that I really want to see, I try and avoid seeing any previews or images, and keeping the experience 'fresh' and not being 'spoiled'. However, curiosity is one of man's traits.....

I would have to say that when I adopted the 'no spoiler' policy (I never read any spoilers, but watched a ton of clips) kicked into effect forSuperman Returns. To this day, the teaser trailer for that film has to be among the best I've seen. The old and the new. The imagery. Great stuff. But I was looking forward to the film so much, I watched EVERY SINGLE preview for the film. And it turned out it wasn't that good. Aungh...

So now, if I could choose what to see of a film before release, it would be the poster, and only the first preview.

The studio doesn't need to 'convince' me to see a film. I already plan to see it. So for me, seeing a preview is needless in that aspect. One of the things that's interesting about trailers, is to analyze what we are shown in it.

One of the films I really looking forward to seeing is Star Trek Into Darkness in May. (ed note: if you didn't like the 'first' Star Trek, that's fine, stick with your 'original' timeline, or don't see the film. Don't ruin the fun for the rest of us.). I enjoyed the first one quite a bit, so naturally, I'll be seeing the sequel. I'm not sure when the preview came out, but I said 'nope! I want it to be fresh. I'll see the movie in May. bye!'. Well, I caved. I saw the first preview only. and that's all I will see (willingly. You never what they'll show in front of other movies...). And I caught a few things.....

Please note, henceforth is speculation. I only saw the first preview, and am reporting my findings here. If anything of what I'm saying proves true, it is merely coincidental.

First up, is Benedict Cumberbatch. Looking at IMDB and Wikipedia, I saw some about his character. Wiki says: "Co-star Karl Urban had stated that Cumberbatch would be playing Gary Mitchell, a character from the original series episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before", but that is unconfirmed by the production team." Well, guess what? On the Star Trek Into Darkness wikipedia page, under the cast list, right there by Benedict's name is a link to that episode, found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_No_Man_Has_Gone_Before .I'll let you read the plot for the episode at your leisure / pace, but a few things stuck out worth mentioning here for analysis purposes: "...When he awakens, Mitchell's eyes glow silver, and he begins to display remarkable psionics." "Mitchell becomes increasingly arrogant and hostile toward the rest of the crew, declaring that he has become godlike, enforcing his desires with fearsome displays of telepathic and telekinetic power." And there's a picture of Benedict's character (see below) of him locked up, probably for a good reason.

The other thing I noticed, was the close-up of 'the hand'. What I'm referring to, without showing a picture (which I will do so, a screencap from the trailer from YouTube) is two hands against each other, with glass between them. All we see are the hands. In previous Star Trek films, Kirk and Spock did that before / as Spock was dying in a chamber. Given the color of the shirtsleeves we see (gold and blue??) it looks to me as if Spock will die. Also, if you look close enough a the 'background' hand, it's hard to tell, but is that the Vulcan salute??

So that's the end of my speculation: Spock will die, and that Benedict will be playing the character (or a variation) from the original series episode, and will exhibit super-powers.

The only way to know for certain is check out the film once it's released....
