New Editions of "New Spring" Coming

Image
TOR, the US publisher of The Wheel of Time series, will be publishing the prequel novel, New Spring , which originate din the form of a short story. Both editions will be paperback, and details follow. First up (and most importantly for collectors) will be the trade paperback edition (same dimensions as a hardback, but paperback instead) which will match the other trade paperback editions, as well as the paperback of The Wheel of Time Companion . It's set to be published on August 18 . The ISBN, which is a direct link to this edition, is 9781250774361 . Secondly, New Spring will be coming out in the design style and format of the new mass-market (smaller) paperbacks. Since that these began being published in the fall of 2019, and all the titles aren't yet out, New Spring isn't "missing" in the same that it was in the trade series, which concluded in the fall of 2015. The publication date for this edition is being published June 30 , and the ISBN for it is 978125...

The Wheel of Time 30th Anniversary

Image
30 years ago today marks the publication of the first book in the massive 14-book Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World . The series is very Tolkien-esque, but not being a ‘copy + paste’ The Lord of the Rings clone. The series does have its flaws (it should have only been 6-10 books, for starters) but it helped establish the fantasy genre (until A Song of Ice and Fire re-defined it) and was incredibly beneficial to the American publisher, TOR. I also like to think if it as the first great fantasy series, post The Lord of the Rings . Even though The Lord of the Rings is not a series, but you get my point. It also has a literary successor, by way of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight. Sanderson is relevant here, as he connected the dots Jordan left before he passed - Jordan was unable to finish the series himself.....but it has *an* ending. Think of him as Christopher Tolkien to J.R.R. Tolkien, in this regard. I suggest looking into that series once you finish The Whe...

Wheel of Time Amazon Series Casting Announcements

Image
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. Big news day for those looking forward to Amazon's Wheel of Time series - myself included. We've got our main Two Rivers characters. I'll run through them again, and add the casting of Rosamund Pike. Rosamund Pike as Moraine: Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara: Zoe Robins as Nyanaeve al'Meara: Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon: Madeleine Madden as Egwene al'Vere: Josha Stradowski as Rand al'Thor: Seems promising! Since that I am not overly attached to the books (I own them (in paperback), I read them, and I enjoyed them) I suppose that means that I'm looking forward to the adaptation. Whereas with Amazon's Middle-earth series, I am attached (quite strongly) to Tolkien's works, so my interest in the adaptation is fairly low as of now. I am looking forward to Netflix's...

"A Fire Within the Ways" Excerpt

Image
What follows is TOR's post about the excerpt titled A Fire Within the Ways from the upcoming Unfettered III anthology coming in March: Tor.com is excited to offer an excerpt from “A Fire Within the Ways,” a deleted novella (!!) from The Wheel of Time ,  and a fascinating look into the process of A Memory of Light , the final volume in Jordan’s epic, came together. A Note From Brandon Sanderson During the editing of every novel, you realize that certain scenes just aren’t working. There are a variety of reasons this happens, and while removing those scenes is always one of the most difficult parts of the creation process, it functions like the proverbial pruning of a tree—providing room for other scenes to grow. In the end, the book is better off. That said, I’m always looking for places to show off scenes like these. They not only expose something I find very interesting about the process, but they often have gems in them that I am eager to share. (The scene with Gaul...

"The Wheel of Time" 25th Anniversary

Image
It's somebody's birthday today . . . One of the most defining books of an era of fantasy now gone  (where the modern fantasy classic is A Game of Thrones  by George R.R. Martin) turns 25 today. I am of course referring to The Eye of the World  ( The Wheel of Time  Book 1). I choose to nevertheless congratulate The Wheel of Time  on being a quarter of a century old. For what it was, The Wheel of Time  was pretty good. To mark the occasion, there is no special edition of the book(s), no anniversary, illustrated etc... perhaps someday. There is some pretty attractive paperbacks being offered by TOR and Orbit, as well as the 'classic' covers. And heres' to another fantasy series, which would not have been possible without you, taking up your mantle - Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight . There is a lot of fantasy out there: A Song of Ice and Fire, Kingkiller Chronicle, The Dagger and the Coin...  but I honestly believe that Stormlight  is your  c...

Book Review: "The Gathering Storm" [Wheel of Time #12]

Image
For the first time in a while, A Wheel of Time was genuinely a good book. I know I've given them each high scores, but this one is definitely a solid work. There is some great resolution happening here (about time, this is book 12 of 14!) and it was good to see so many things happen in this book. I didn't notice the hand-over from Jordan to Sanderson too much. You can pick up bits here and there, but this definitely feels like a Wheel of Time book...just one of the better ones. Also, I like that 'Gathering Storm' to me, has two meanings. This is a good, strong wheel of Time book, and is one of the series' strongest, and the strongest in years.   Onward! I give this one .... 4/5

"The Strike at Shayol Ghul" by Robert Jordan

This was posted on the internet by Robert Jordan in 1996. Back then, that basically means that it's free...and it's circulating long enough that by now it's sure to be. This short piece explains the imprisonment of the Dark One, and the events surrounding it. Read more....

"The Wheel of Time" ebooks

Image
The Wheel of Time  series is now complete, as today the final book was released in ebook format. There is no 'complete series' download bundle which includes all 14 books, but books 1-14 are ready for download. So if you read, or plan to read this series not as a printed book, you're in luck.  Myself? I'm waiting for  A Memory of Light  in mass market paperback, as I have the previous thirteen books in that format. I'm going to guess  that it should be out as early as October of this year, as late as next Jan, as the publisher is pretty good for releasing paperbacks in a timely manner. I'll also keep you posted on the 'trade paperback' re-issues, as well.  Sometime ago I posted the series prologue. Here is something a little more....
