The Tolkien Signature Paperback Collection: Master Listing

Recently, HarperCollins has been re-issuing most of the Tolkien titles in a new paperback style. Since that a vast majority of these share ISBNs with other covers, eventually the older covers will be replaced with the new. I wanted to provide head's up for that. If ordered via Amazon UK, Blackwell's, or Waterstones, you'll very likely have the newer/Signature cover. If possible, it may be best to actually visit the bookstore so you can see which one they actually have on their shelves.

This post is a Master Post, collecting ISBNs of the titles released in this style. I have made them into 'groups' or 'sets' for ease of reference, as well as possibly assist in purchasing them, if one were to get more than one book at once. Where boxed sets exist, the 'collection Number' will replicate the titles contained in a boxed set. Over the course of time, this post will get updated. Once a new title comes to this format, I'll do a separate blog post focusing on that title; and provide it's ISBN, cover art, and description.

Enough of these have come out that I feel like that this would be great opportunity to address and collect this information.

NOTE: once the cover artwork for a Signature Edition is revealed, it gets added to this blog post. It may take a few additional months for HarperCollins to send them out, and/or for the older covers to 'vanish.'

When and where possible, try to physically a bookstore (Blackwell's, Waterstones....) to actually see the book. Most of these will use existing ISBNs, making recently-published Signature Editions a bit tricky to get via ordering online (you may get older stock.) Please bear this in mind.

~UPDATE: August 2026:
I've re-organized some collection numbers to best narrow all of these paperbacks down by 'theme' as best as I can. There's a few titles here and there that may come to this style. should that happen, they will likely be added to existing collection numbers. Depending on the timing of that happening (and the titles in question) there may be a Collection XII. But chances are some of the existing ones will get 'padded' out first.

To avoid confusion, I've revised this post, removed prior 'updates' and shuffled the titles and ISBNs where relevant.

Note: currently, Collection IX is seen as a 'miscellaneous' collection: we're got Tales From the Perilous Realm in there (each expanded segment takes up a Collection of its own!), The Nature of Middle-earth (due to not fitting in with another Collection, due to book count), and The Fall of Numenor will likely be added to that one. I typically give each Collection 3-5 books, 'simulating' a boxed set. So, Collection IX will likely have two more added to it (one of which will likely be The Fall of Numenor) and I can see it going as far as Collection XII.

The Monsters and the Critics will very likely remain in its current Collection number - but there's always a chance that it may move.

This is ever-evolving, as we don't know which titles will join this style - or when.
