SOUND (MIXING)

Argo

Lincoln
Skyfall  *

PRODUCTION DESIGN

Anna Karenina
The Hobbit: Part 1 *
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln

The Hobbit: Part 1 was very well made, one of the strongest aspects of the film.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Anna Karenina
Django Unchained  *
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Skyfall

Django & Skyfall both had incredible cinematography, as did The Hobbit: Part 1...which was not nominated here. Django had more of an epic 'feel' and 'scope' to it.

MAKEUP

Hitchcock
The Hobbit: Part 1 *
Les MisĂ©rables

I mean come on, it's Gandalf the Grey....and look at all those dwarves!

COSTUME

Anna Karenina
Les Misérables
Lincoln  *
Mirror Mirror
Snow White and the Huntsman

EDITING

Argo
Life of Pi s
Lincoln  *
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

VFX

The Hobbit: Part 1  *
Life of Pi
The Avengers
Prometheus
Snow White and the Huntsman

The Hobbit: Part 1 lives up to the expectations of the graphics department set by Lord of the Rings.

Thoughts: Some expected, some unexpected. I was surprise by the lack of nominees for The Hobbit: Part 1 and The Dark Knight Rises in the technical departments - cinematography, sound, and score. I wish well that film well, as well as Django, Les Miserables and Lincoln, as they are all excellent pieces of work in their own right. I'm glad for Django Unchained and Skyfall.
