THE HISTORY OF THE HOBBIT Slipcased Edition Forthcoming

 


In February 2023 (at the time of this writing) The History of The Hobbit will be (finally) be getting a slipcased edition.

The ISBN is ‎ 9780008601409. As of now, there is no product image, or a 'proper' description (the one that is there is for the hardback edition). It can be assumed, that, based on the price point as well as the nature of the work, that it will in the 'traditional' style of slipcased editions which began in 2004, and that The Fall of Numenor will belong to. I mention The Fall of Numenor, as it will be the newest title that'll be offered in that particular format. Meaning, it won't be the illustrated wrap-around style, or the 'illustrated by the author' style (which, in turn, is a variation of the 'traditional' style.)

Together, The History of Middle-earth 12-book series (13, if you count the compilation Index book), The History of The Hobbit and The Nature of Middle-earth provide the ultimate 'deep-dive' into Tolkien's writing, and the evolution of his legendarium. You'll find earlier drafts, other versions, and stuff that just doesn't appear elsewhere.

I'll be sure to keep you posted once more news of this surface.

In closing, I'm 100% speculating that this design will be the motif: (an early version of Smaug drawn by Tolkien himself)

  Recently, HarperCollins has been re-issuing most of the Tolkien titles in a new paperback style. Since that a vast majority of these share ISBNs with other covers, eventually the older covers will be replaced with the new. I wanted to provide head's up for that. If ordered via Amazon UK, Blackwell's, or Waterstones, you'll very likely have the newer/Signature cover. An Update

So I bet you're wondering how The Saga of Kalvel is coming.  It's going well, but slow. I'm not putting into as much time writing the series as I'd like. It's still being thought of in my head, and I'm only able to get to it part time, but I'm still planning and writing at the same time. This weekend I'm hoping to binge through some.  I'm working on the third chapter for one character, and would like to start the first chapter for another character. I begun as early as Dec. 2011, and my deadline is August of 2016, but so far I have approx about 40 completed manuscript pages that I'm thinking of going back to until the first draft is completely done.  Now. That's manuscript pages.  If I were total everything I'd ever written about Kalvel, it would be closer to around 100 (give or takr about 15 either direction, some things are in various states.)
