Tolkien 2021: A Look Ahead

Near the end of the year, I often like to think of, and look forward to, what Tolkien books may be coming out during the following year.

Here are some upcoming titles that we know are coming in 2021, at this point in time:

- The Annotated Hobbit [Third Edition]
-
The Nature of Middle-earth
- The Silmarillion
, illustrated by Ted Nasmith (part of The Tolkien Illustrated Hardback Collection: Ver. 2). This will also get a collector's edition (which will match the illustrated collector's edition of Unfinished Tales)
- 2022 Tolkien Calendar (based on the illustrated edition of The Silmarillion would be my guess as to its theme. My second guess would be tied-in to A Middle-earth Traveller)
- Tales From the Perilous Realm (hardback re-issue). Should be pretty much identical to the 2008 one, except it'll have a new ISBN. Also expecting other smaller details: ribbon-marker, etc.
- Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (new paperback edition). This has a new ISBN, new cover art, and includes Tolkien's 1953 lecture on Sir Gawain.
-
Unfinished Tales illustrated edition (paperback) [this one's a maybe. Would not be surprised if it were to exist or not. It's also possible that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings may get an illustrated paperback edition, whether a reprint/update of the 2008 editions, or an all new edition [new cover art, new ISBN's, etc.]

'Wish List'

These are some titles that I'd love to see exist, either next year or ever:

-
The Silmarillion Sketchbook by Ted Nasmith. Calendar for the following year could also be based on this.
-
The Silmarillion Poster Collection 2 by Ted Nasmith. Would feature 6 of the new images introduced in the 2004 illustrated edition. There was one with his 6 of his illustrations from the 1998 edition.
-
The Great Tales Sketchbook by Alan Lee.
-
The Great Tales Poster Collection (2x prints from each book (The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien and The Fall of Gondolin), being the images used for the front and rear of the dustjackets)
-
Unfinished Tales Poster Collection
(2x prints from each of the 3 artists)
- Exploring The Lord of the Rings by Corey Olsen (also narrating the audiobook). Could serve as a sequel to his Exploring The Hobbit, possibly in a multi-book boxed set. I'm not referring to what he does with The Lord of the Rings Online, though it may be possible that the book version could be taken from parts of those lectures.

So that's pretty much all as of now! We'll see what items come out throughout 2021. I'll of course update the blog accordingly.
