Fear is the Mind Killer

A long time ago (19 years) I began a Tolkien fan, thanks to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, combined with the vast assortment of titles by, or relating to, Tolkien at the boookstore.

Now, I know quite a bit about books. Which is why I'm making this post.

We are a few months away from the re-adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune (the first of 6 books in his Dune saga), and without a doubt, many will have seen the trailer, and are rushing to bookstores to get a copy of the book. Or possibly gift it to someone.

This post will walk you through the various editions in hopes of helping you make a decision.

First up, we have the deluxe hardback. The ISBN (very important to find an exact edition when buying books) is 9780593099322. This deluxe hardcover edition of Dune includes:

· An iconic new cover
· Stained edges and fully illustrated endpapers
· A beautifully designed poster on the interior of the jacket
· A redesigned world map of Dune
· An updated Introduction by Brian Herbert

Please note, that books 2-6 don't exist in this format. If they did, this would be the format I'd own.

Next up is Penguin's Galaxy edition. Other titles of theirs have also come out in this style....but, again, none of the other Dune titles (google 'Penguin Galaxy' to find more). This edition is hardback, without a dustjacket, and as you can see has some 'art deco in the style of some of the sets of Blade Runner' font for the cover. In terms of contents, the only thing really new to the table, features-wise, is that there's an introduction by Neil Gaiman. The ISBN for this edition is
9780143111580.

Lastly, for hardbacks, is what I call the 'vintage edition.' It's a standard size hardback with no extra features or trimmings, but looks like it was designed in the '70s or '80s, going by some of the fonts used inside. Again, books 2-6 don't exist like this. This edition's ISBN is
9780441005901.

Dune

Now, last but not least, we come to the paperback edition....of all 6 books! Yes that is right, we're finally getting to matching editions of all 6 books! It's slightly annoying when only the first book in a series gets all the 'attention' when it comes to various designs or styles. So if you want a marching set of all 6 books, these editions are your best bet. Here are their titles, and ISBN's:

Dune:
9780441013593
Dune Messiah:
9780593201732
Children of Dune:
9780593201749
God Emperor of Dune:
9780593201756
Heretics of Dune:
9780593201763
Chapterhouse Dune:
9780593201770

All of those share a matching design style.

I hope that this has been helpful in helping you to decide which edition to buy.
