Book (Re)Review: "The Shadow Rising" (Wheel of Time book 4)

I finished reading The Shadow Rising. What follows is my review of The Wheel of Time book 4....

This book felt more like an extension or the 'after effects' of The Dragon Reborn rather than a new book or continuation of the story. A little hard to describe what I mean there, but if you read books 1-3 than you know what I mean by there's a 'formula' to the series, where this feels more connected to another book than the others. Once I read the whole series, I;ll kinda break it down book by book and as a series as a whole as well as the final book.

Anyway, this book is still a good read, but it felt long. I don't mean because of the page count but because it takes a while for things to happen. It takes about 3-5 chapters for an 'event' to start, or begin starting. If they took about ten chapters total out here and there, it would have made for a better tighter read. Some of George R.R. Martin's books are large but that's because of story. I didn't find those felt 'overlong'. This is still book 4 of 14, so my mind may change by the end of the series.

The scenes of Perrin back in the Two Rivers fighting for his life, as well as the village's survival were the best, most touching and overall best written.

Jordan is still s good writer, (except for writing about and comparing genders...) but signs of the series' imperfection are beginning to show....

Overall, I give this book, like the previous three....

4/5

Although there were times I was tempted to give it 3.5 / 5. Let's hope some 'eye rolling' moments go away, and the descriptions of characters habits, etc. change. And stop with the re-caps! If we're on book 4, we know what happens in books 1-3....
